Help us save more dogs' lives
Our journey started in 2023 after our founder Yessenia, who had spent several years of her teens and adulthood living in Europe and in the UK, went back for holidays to her birth country “Peru”.
What began as a family holiday soon became something much more significant. During the trip, she came face to face with the issues closest to her heart as an animal lover and dog mum: the overpopulation of stray animals and the abandonment of pets.
It was then, determined to make a difference and give a chance to Peruvian dogs of a better life, that Somos Vagabondis (“we are strays”) was born, out of love for dogs and a profound desire to help the ones that society has forgotten. Her years spent in Scotland nurtured and deepened that love and strengthened her commitment towards the Peruvian’s four-legged friends.
Somos Vagabondis is a registered charity in Scotland whose mission is to improve the quality of life of stray animals in Peru, preventing animal cruelty and suffering, by managing the population of strays efficiently through the offer of free neutering to disadvantaged communities, where measurable impact can drive local and national decision making to put an end to the issue.
It is estimated that there are up to 4 million strays on the streets of Lima. Despite informal efforts by local communities to care for individual dogs, there are many that fall through the gaps. At present, the government has yet to implement effective programmes to address this problem and small charities are leading the way in animal welfare.
We work alongside local communities and organisations in Lima-Peru to implement effective sterilisation/neutering programs while leveraging global support from volunteers and donors to fund our actions.
We offer free sterilisation/neutering of animals in underserved communities and promote education and awareness on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
With the scale of the problem in Lima, we have realised that a focus on sterilisation/neutering campaigns is the best long term strategy to reduce dogs' suffering. We arrange for a team of vets to visit a community, offering free neutering to dog owners. Volunteers raise awareness of upcoming campaigns in communities and identify people to look after stray dogs as they recover. As little as £12 can pay for sterilising/neutering one dog. Even the smallest donation will make a difference to a dog's life in Peru.
Alongside this long term approach, we have a focus on the welfare of existing strays, providing where possible nutrition and medication to those most in need.
